Hiking Near Atlanta With Friends (2026): 4 Trails for a Group Hike
Pick a trail, pick a morning, and go together.
Why hiking works for a group of friends
A hike is the easiest workout to say yes to. Nobody needs gear beyond good shoes and water, everyone can go at a talking pace, and the conversation is the point. A two hour trail gives you more real time together than most dinners.
The hard part is not the hike. It is picking a trail, picking a morning, and getting everyone in a car at the same time.
Sweetwater Creek State Park: the best first group hike
Sweetwater Creek State Park, west of the city in Lithia Springs, is the classic first pick. The Red (History) Trail reaches the five story New Manchester mill ruins in about half a mile, beside the creek's rapids, and the park calls it the recommended hike for first time visitors, according to its trails page. The second half mile past the mill is much rockier. If your group wants more, the White Trail is a 5.2 mile loop through the quieter parts of the park.
Georgia state parks charge a daily parking fee, so plan for one per car.
Kennesaw Mountain: a short climb with a view
Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is the pick when your group wants a real climb without a full day. The National Park Service describes the hike from the visitor center to the top of Big Kennesaw Mountain as about 1.1 miles, moderately difficult, with switchbacks and benches along the way, on its hike page. The loop up and back is about 2 miles. Longer options run to Pigeon Hill (5.4 mile loop) and beyond, per the park's trail map.

East Palisades: river views close to town
The Palisades East unit of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area has about 5 miles of easy to difficult trails through floodplain, ridges and ravines, with an overlook above the Devil's Race Course Shoals, according to the National Park Service. It is a good choice for an intown group that wants woods without a long drive. The park requires an entrance pass and does not accept cash, per its fees page.
Arabia Mountain: granite, quarry ruins and free parking
Southeast of the city near Lithonia, the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve has miles of trails across granite outcrops, past quarry remnants and lakes. The trails are open dawn to dusk, and there is no fee for parking or trail use, according to the Arabia Mountain Heritage Alliance. Stay off the puddles and sandy patches on the rock, where rare plants grow.
The trail details above come from each park's official page as of November 2026. Fees and hours change, so check before you go.
How to plan a group hike that does not fall apart
First, pick one trail and one start time. "Sweetwater, Saturday at 8, Red Trail to the mill" is a plan. "We should go hiking sometime" is not.
Second, match the trail to the slowest person. A short trail everyone finishes beats a long one that splits the group.
Third, carpool from one meeting spot. Fewer cars means fewer parking fees and fewer people running late.
Fourth, plan the stop after. Breakfast or coffee on the way home is what makes people want to go again.
The invite that gets a yes
Send a specific plan with a low stakes out: "Kennesaw Mountain, Saturday at 8, up and back in about an hour, breakfast after. I am going either way, come if you want in."
